POWERPOINT PROJECT

English 10

Westrum

09/12/2011

Assignment:

Over the last week, we’ve become acquainted with the strange world of 1984.  As we continue to read, it’s time to crystallize our understanding of these ideas.  Using the basic ideas we’ve encountered so far (and a few we’re starting to hit now!), the class, in groups, will research and define one of these concepts, constructing a brief powerpoint for the class.

Itinerary:

Each group will be assigned one concept, idea, or phrase from the following set: Newspeak/Doublespeak, Historical Revision, Totalitarianism, Nationalism, Surveillance, Big Brother.

Groups will research their assigned concepts and build a powerpoint in which they provide the class as a whole with a working definition of their concept.  This powerpoint MUST define the concept AND give a brief history of its use.  In building this “history” lesson, keep in mind and be sure to look into exactly what Orwell had in mind when introducing these ideas into the novel, and what the real-world counterparts might be.  This powerpoint must be a minimum of eight slides

On top of the powerpoint, each group is responsible for an artistic component.  This will take the form of a poster in which you define the concept visually.  You can take your cues from how the posters in the novel are described, how they were interpreted for filmed versions, or you can go your own way.  These posters will be displayed in the classroom as a reference for the class as a good cheat-sheet as we continue reading.

This project is due at the end of class on Wednesday, September 14th and is due 75 points.  Extra Credit is available for artistic creativity, so be creative, be visual, and be abstract!!!
